What are Alkaline Earth Metals? Define Alkaline Earth Metals

Alkaline Earth Metals are used as a term in Periodic Chemistry when classifying the chemical elements. Each element can usually be classified as a metal or a non-metal based on their general Chemical and Physical Properties. These metals are any of the metallic elements within Group 2 in the Periodic Table (see the List of Alkaline metals). The name Alkaline Earth Metals refer to their oxides that simply give basic alkaline solutions. They are reactive and widely distributed in rock structures.

What are Alkaline Earth Metals? Common Properties of Alkaline Earth Metals
Alkaline metals are usually shiny solids that conduct heat or electricity and can be formed into sheets. With the exception of beryllium and magnesium, the metals have a distinguishable flame color, orange for calcium, bright red for strontium, green for barium and crimson red for radium. Nearly 75% of all the elements in the Periodic Table are classified as metals which are detailed in the List of Metals.

Common properties of Alkaline Earth metals
The elements classed as "Alkaline Earth metals" have the following properties in common:

  • Shiny Solids
  • Two electrons in the outer shell
  • Can conduct heat or electricity
  • Can be formed into sheets

Alkaline Earth Metals List - Chemical Elements in the Periodic Table
The elements contained in the classification of Alkaline Earth Metal list are as follows:

Elements classified as Alkaline Earth Metals
The 6 elements classified as "Alkaline Earth Metals" are located in Group 2 elements of the Periodic Table. Elements classified as Alkaline Earth Metals are all found in the Earth’s crust, but not in the elemental form as they are so reactive. Instead, they are widely distributed in rock structures.

Elements in the Periodic Table are classified as follows:
  • Metalloids
  • Alkali Metals
  • Alkaline Earth Metals
  • Transition Metals
  • Other Metals
  • Non-metals
  • Halogens
  • Noble Gases
  • Rare Earth Elements
